I managed to find a DVD copy of Star Trek: The motion pcture at Blockbuster yesterday - not only brand new, but cheap! Not bad, as I later saw that this DVD was now out of print :-DD However, I ralso realized that it was shorter than I had seen the "longer version", produced for TV in teh eighties, was, so I started worrying that some of the key Spock scenes Gerrold mentionned in TWOST wouldn't be part of the cut and merely in the Deleted Scenes. After well over an hour of web browsing, I finally understood that 3 versions of that movie exist:
-The original theatrical cut.
-The 1983 extended version made for TV, 146 minutes.
-The Director's Cut: 136 minutes. Some of the "unecessary" footage from the original theatrical version was cut off (loooong shots of the Enterprise, unnecessary lines), and they restored some of the footage from the longer TV version, although not all of it either - which sounds logical, as there has to be a reason it was cut in the first place. The result, according to reviews, is a smoother-paced movie with less extra fat and improved by the addition of some key scenes (including Spock crying for V'Ger at the end).
So thanks to THIS site http://www.dvdjournal.com/reviews/s/startrek01tmp.shtml I was convinced I had he better version and didn't need to re-sell my DVD in hopes of finding the VHS longer version.
Now I need to decide if I buy the motion picture trilogy for movies II - IV, or if I try to find the 2-disc editions of thsoe (could be hard to find and much pricier. The difference lies in the special features. From what I see, the individual movies include a ton while on the trilogy discs there are barely any. Plus, in the trilogy, movie 2 is in its thetrical cut instead of Director's cut. Problem is, the individual special editions are out of print and I'm unsure I'll be able to find them, and the trilogy is cheap. I'll gave my usual selection of used books stores a visit, see what I find.
Interesting article with a bunch of cool comments: http://trekmovie.com/2009/04/06/excerpts-from-jj-abrams-interview-in-new-sfx-star-trek-issue/
Here is another article on something I had not really thought of (as surprising as it may seem): the fact that Spock's involvement with Uhura might affect the bond he's suppposed to form with Jim:http://drconway.wordpress.com/2009/05/09/the-new-star-trek-an-end-to-the-greatest-bromance-of-all-time-or-how-spocks-new-romantic-life-challenges-the-sentimental-world-of-classic-star-trek/ I hadn't thought of it before, but now it haunts me and disturbs me a lot. *gnaws at nails* Oh well. I guess we won't really see until the next movie...
