Rec list: Evan Buckley/Eddie Diaz (Buddie) 9-1-1

All those years later, am I not only still alive, but discovering new fandoms? You bet I am! 😃😁 And this one I fell in love with it purely through fanfic, before I even watched the source material (I am all caught up now). Buddie, I love you 😚💋

If you want a longer list of really great stories, you can check my 911 bookmarks on AO3. I love some more than others, of course, but I stand by all of those and I'm a fairly demanding reader.

Some authors you can pretty much trust with your eyes closed: HMSLusitania, letmetellyouaboutmyfeels,
Always solid w lots of great fics: DaniWib, glorious_spoon, rarakiplin (gmontys), brewrosemilk,

Otherwise, here are my fav recs:

* I Hate Accidents (Except When We Went From Friends To This) by morganofthefairies. There's doing things in the wrong order in a relationship, and then there's the summum: doing it the Buddie way 😂😂😂 Touching and hysterical and maddening and loving. Oblivious Eddie and Buck at their finest, with wildly entertained yet despairing and resigned crew of the 118 as support cast.

*Leave the Light On (I'll Be Coming Home) by HMSLusitania. When Eddie is presumed dead following a water rescue, Buck has to fight the Diaz parents to keep Christopher with him, unaware that in a city far downstream, an amnesiac man is waking up in a coma ward. Probably my absolute favorite Buddie fic, the one that got me onto the Buddie train hardcore when I barely knew who those characters were. Outstanding writing, thrilling plot, so many poignant scenes while Buck and Chris try to heal, amazing OC, the amnesia and presumed dead tropes... Ugh. I reread this fic on a regular basis.

Those Two Firefighters by DarkFairytale. The one where the public notice Buck and Eddie and their unusual connection, and they go viral without their knowledge.  If one fic is a staple in the fandom, this is it! Great fic to revisit all the important events (and some minor ones) from season 2 onwards. Loved the 3rd person POVs and the running Internet comments.

All Your Ordinary Kisses by giselleslash. Buck mentions to the team how much he misses kissing when he’s not in a relationship. Eddie makes a really stupid suggestion. My very first story in this fandom. Hadn't even HEARD of the show before, but tried it because I adore the author, and the summary pushed all my buttons, and I ended up falling in love with Buck and Eddie. So much fluff and cuteness.
*empty, broken, lonely, hoping by DaniWib. Eddie's world crumbles when Buck’s apartment building is engulfed in a cataclysmic seven-alarm fire, with Buck and Christopher believed to be inside. An absolute rollercoaster of a story that gave me emotional whiplash. Eddie's sheer despair is unmatched. I still cry buckets every time I read this and masochistically come back for more.

Buck the Bachelor by terranobis. After responding to an emergency at the Bachelor mansion, Buck is offered the chance to become the Bachelor. Eddie encourages him to do it. Neither of them realizes how much they'd miss each other, and what realizations that would bring...

if i need to rearrange my particles — i will for you. by dylaesthetics
Buck decides to join a new app that connects first responders to each other, makes a new friend and starts sharing things he could never tell anyone else, all while mounrning the fact he and Eddie are growing distant.

During a search and rescue, Eddie disappears without a trace, leaving Buck to grapple with the sudden possibility of a life without him AKA the Mudslide Missing!Eddie fic with pining for daaayyyyyyyzzzzzzz

ElBombero118

To Build a Home We Deconstruct Our Rituals by letmetellyouaboutmyfeels. After the shooting, Eddie realizes he needs to put his affairs in order in case something happens again. His solution? Marrying Buck. I adore this trope. So well done.

listen to you breathing (is where I wanna be) by Yavilee. Buck is presumed dead after a huge building collapse. As the search for survivors, and then bodies, slowly makes its way through the debris, Eddie tries to come to terms with losing the man he never confessed he loved. A new find. Eddie destroyed me in this. So good.

*I Hit the Accelerator (But the Car was in Reverse) by extasiswings, letmetellyouaboutmyfeels. Newly-dumped Buck figures blowing off some steam with his hot new coworker, and then being friends with benefits, is a great idea. But feelings get involved quickly. Some BDSM. Hot as fuck 🔥🔥🔥

*what a heart can do by bvckandeddie (zukkababey). In which Buck donated his sperm years early, and when Connor and Kameron die, Buck becomes the guardian of their - his - daughter he never knew existed. My fav "Buck has a child" fic. Cassie is so REAL.

*Something Dumb to Do by glorious_spoon. Bemoaning their respective dating lives, Buck and Eddie "jokingly" say it's too bad they can't just date each other. But when they decide to try something out, the results are...unexpected. And very, very hot. This gave me hot flashes like woah. I LOVE this trope.

Close My Eyes and Stumble (Right Into Your Love) by HMSLusitania. In which Eddie became a dispatcher right from the start, and over calls gets to know one Firefighter Buckley. So interesting to see an Eddie who's happy in this position! Loved the way their relationship developed in this slightly different setting.
*Courtship Behaviors of the Southern Coastal Husbro by Mad_Lori. Buck and Eddie decide to become platonic domestic partners and co-parents. Which, obviously, totally remains platonic. Right. Stupendous writing as always with Lori. Love this so damn much.
Half Awake in Our Fake Empire by HMSLusitania. The Molly AM Buckley Diaz fic. Buck learns he fathered a daughter during his 1.0 days, and gets custody after the mother dies. He and Eddie decide to "temporarily" join resources to raise their children. Another fabulous child OC. The family they build together is so beautiful.

Mudslide - Eddie presumed dead

Supernatural elements:

tomorrow will always and forever now be today (tomorrow is our always and forever) by withmeornotatall. Eddie gets trapped in a time loop on the day Buck marries Natalia. My fav time loop, because the context is already so fraught with emotion.
Timeloop - post lawsuit.
Timeloop - dinner at the Buckleys. Stuck together. They die. Buck not ready to admit he's gay.

Your Love is an Oil Slick (It Glows like Rainbows, It Stains My Soul) by letmetellyouaboutmyfeels. Eddie thought his son had an imaginary friend, but it turns out their new house is simply haunted. Such a cool premise, wonderfully done, just spooky enough.

*Come Away, O Human Child by JustABunchOfHocusPocus. An AU where Buck is a Changeling, Eddie's a werewolf and magic is a normal part of life, especially with the 118. WIP, but read it because the worldbuilding is fucking INSANE.
Very wordy, but I was never bored once. Made me want to hug Buck hard and never let go. A gem.

AUs:

Mr Buckley is Chris' schoolteacher
hurt locker by bvckandeddie (zukkababey). Buck enlists in the army alongside his best friend and secret love Eddie Diaz after they learn Shannon is pregnant. Awesome OCs, deep and complex Buddie relationship.
*Let My Ink Stain Your Pages by letmetellyouaboutmyfeels. Castle AU (apparently). Police officer Eddie Diaz is bummed when hotshot bestselling author Evan Buckley, stuck with writer's block, starts shadowing his cases for inspiration. Super long, thrilling plot, fantastic dynamic and awesome cases. I love how puppy-like rich, bigshot author Buck manages to remain, how badass Eddie is, and how he goes from tolerating his annoying shadow to the two of them becoming friends, to realizing Buck is actually a great asset on the job, to mad forever love.

*a bleeding sun on a silver screen by rarakiplin (gmontys). Actors AU. Actor Buck felt threatened by secretive, much-praised newcomer Eddie Diaz when they first met, but it quickly gave way to a friendship and trust deeper than both men had ever known. But can Eddie ever truly accept it becoming more? This whole story was just...wow. A complex relationship, the silver screen environment, the way they evolve throughout the movies they shoot together with the firefam, the blur between the actors and their roles... Simply fabulous. Plus, that scorching historical gay movie they eventually embark on and what it leads to? Eeeeeek!
Never Been Bucked by PirateEmeritus85. Evan Buckley is tired of uprooting his every six months. When he and his older sister move to L.A., he hopes to make the City of Angels his forever home. When he arrives at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, he is excited to make a new start. Things start off rough until an extremely attractive, brown-eyed AP English teacher steps in to ensure Buck makes it through his final year of high school. (Teacher Eddie, senior student Buck)
*stupid people. by brewrosemilk. Hooker AU. New to LA and to being gay, Eddie decides to explore the latter by hiring a sex worker, to keep things uncomplicated. But Eddie could never be a distant, unfeeling customer, and big-hearted Buck can't help falling for his kind, handsome patron. Honestly, this was even better than Pretty Woman. SO. MANY. FEELS. I love the way the characters and their encounters were depicted. And Eddie spends SO much money 😂.
*To Boldly Go by lemotmo. Star Trek AU. After picking up a distress signal, the crew of rescue spaceship FS-118 save a father and son who'd been stranded for years on a desolate moon. As they fly to return Eddie and Chris to their home planet, the duo get close with chief engineer Buckley, and Eddie is going to have to make decisions about the future he really wants. Epic, epic, epic story with fabulous characterization! No knowledge of Star Trek required, an open mind is plenty enough.
