Coup de coeur: Boston Legal

I finally got around to watching the first episodes of Boston Legal season 1 which I got from the library last week (yup, Shatner binge still ongoing :D). I wasn't sure dad would even want to watch it with me because Alzheimers' a touchy subject with him, with grandma lost to it, but I think it's the lure of quirky characters and boisterous Shatner that won him over. And boy wasn't he glad he watched it too.

OMG it is SO good. Into Greatness category, even. I had formed an idea of the characters from my BL fanfiction reads a few weeks ago (stemmed from the Shatner binge too), but they still had a caricatural quality in my mind. Now they've acquired a new depth and I have faces to go with the names I kept skipping in the fanfics. And there is so much more that the Denny-Alan relationship to appreciate in this series (although I'm looking forward to seeing it develop - at this stage they seem to be just good co-workers). I found myself just as drawn to the side stories of the customers, Lori, Brad and co. Brad because he seems like a good man behind the facade and he is handsome, and Lori because she's the girl who played in Patch Adams and she has that cute, endearing good-girl-next-door to her. And I could finally see for myself Alan's skirt-chasing, Denny's love of his own name, the partners scheming to draw Denny out of the business, and Alan's soft, ambiguous looks at Denny. And the balcony!!

The writing is witty and bubbly like champagne, with repartee fusing as quick as lightning and elightfully outrageous lines shot by pretty much everyone. Yet there were also some more serious and deep scenes, especially involving Denny and his slowly declining faculties. When Paul told him he wasn't Denny Crane anymore, it was like a stab to the heart. But don't you believe Denny's finished. Oh no. The man is still brilliant. Shatner is truly magnificent in this role, like it was written for him. *kneels and bows at the Shat altar*

So I watched the first 2 episodes and it was a fantastic hour and a half of laughing and gasping and reflection - but mostly laughing :) I can't wait for tomorrow night to watch this series some more. *grinning*

******

Speaking of Shatner, I just read an article saying he will probably return for the sequel of Free Enterprise (whatever that is. Can't remember). AND there was insinuation that Nimoy might maybe possibly be along for the ride. OMG I so wish so. I'll try to sleep with my fingers crossed, in case it may help.
